Air Charter Safety – Electing to land at an alternate airport

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

Last weekend, we heard the bad news about the tragic plane crash that took the lives of the Polish President, Lech Kaczynsk, his wife and 96 people.  If you didn’t hear about the accident, the president and several leaders of the country were traveling to western Russia to attend a memorial when their plane suddenly crashed into trees hidden by dense fog.

The horrific crash took everyone by surprise and launched Poland into a deep state of mourning.  We were also deeply saddened to learn about the accident and we send our thoughts and prayers to those affected by the tragedy.

Even though private aviation is the safest form of travel in the world, accidents can still happen when compromising decisions are made that jeopardize air charter safety.  For this reason, our jet charter agency analyzes accidents in private aviation to ensure that the same mistakes aren’t made during your air charter flight.

Based on early investigation reports of the accident, we know that the crash was caused by the pilots’ decision to fly into dense fog despite repeated warnings from air traffic control. If you’re unfamiliar with aviation weather, fog can become a serious issue for pilots when it reduces their ability to see the runway. The pilots in command of the 70-year old Russian airliner disregarded the warnings of thick fog several times and refused to divert to another airport.  This caused the pilots to descend below the flight path and accidentally crash into trees hidden by fog.

An integral part of air charter safety is knowing when to abort a flight mission and land at an alternate airport.  This particular incident could have been avoided had the pilots diverted to an alternate airport upon first receiving word of the inclement conditions from ATC.  Instead, the pilots refused to take the weather seriously, and it ended up costing the lives of everyone aboard the aircraft.

Pilots acquire the ability to determine when to divert to alternate airports through many years of training, strict adherence to FAA regulations and an appreciation of severe weather conditions.  In this particular incident, the pilots failed to appreciate the severity of the weather and had the pilots obtained a weather report maybe they would have never attempted to start the engines of the aircraft.

In order to ensure your air charter safety, our jet charter agency offers a free daily weather report system to pilots and our clients.  With the weather report, your pilots can stay informed of hazardous weather conditions, such as fog, that can significantly affect your air charter safety.  We also offer a personalized weather report for your charter flight that identifies inclement weather conditions along your specific flight.  By providing weather information about hazardous weather conditions, we believe that we can help reduce the number of weather-related flight accidents in private aviation.

Charter Aircraft Profiles – Heavy Jets

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

We recently began a short series on the comparisons between different sizes, or classes, of charter aircraft.

Our first individual profile begins with the Heavy Jet category. They represent the biggest class of business jets and are the ultimate in traveling luxury, with long-range capabilities and large capacities for passengers, baggage and other cargo. Since they offer the most room of any private aircraft, heavy jets are often the best choice for larger groups or long flights, especially overseas travel.

The average width of their cabins is around 7.5 feet and the cabin lengths range from between about 28 feet and 50 feet depending on the make and model. Heavy Jets also have an average cabin height of a little over six feet, which gives them true “stand up” cabins. This offers passengers plenty of room to move around and get comfortable during their flight. Large reclining armchairs and comfortable couches (that can also convert to beds) certainly lend a hand in the comfort department!

Heavy Jets are usually configured to seat between nine and 16 passengers in complete comfort, and include the addition of a flight attendant, not generally present on smaller sized jets. The attendant can typically serve you with a hot meal to go along with your drinks. Office equipment or full entertainment systems are present on many Heavy Jets as well. A fully enclosed lavatory is yet another convenient amenity found on jets of this size.

During the winter season, it’s also nice to know that Heavy Jets are well-suited for bad weather conditions. They cruise quietly at up to 560 mph and up to an altitude of 50,000 feet, allowing these jets to travel above most inclement weather. Of course, ice or snow conditions on the ground – at your origination or destination airport – can also dictate your travel schedule.

Some common Heavy Jets are Gulfstreams, Falcons and Challengers. For more information on these aircraft and your many other travel options, please contact us at Stratos Jet Charters.

Emergency Medical Evacuation – It Could Save Your Life

Hope for the Best…But Plan for the Worst.

The recent happenings in Mexico with the H1N1 virus, or swine flu, and then the spread of the virus around the world, got me thinking about a very particular and vital service that we offer here at Stratos Jets. Let’s start with a few questions:

What if you had a medical emergency or life-threatening accident of some kind in a foreign country? Or even an American city, far from home?

Who would you call?

What if another viral pandemic, even more deadly than the swine flu, broke out in close proximity to your current travel location on the globe?

Would you receive adequate medical care? Or have the best chance of avoiding the spreading illness altogether?

What would you do?

Red tape and lack of proficiency in the Spanish language (or other host languages) can make it nearly impossible for Americans to receive adequate medical care or emergency evacuation from Mexico, along with a wide variety of other countries.

Stratos Jets will help get you out of your destination country and back to the U.S. as quickly as possible, sometimes within hours, if you have a serious medical emergency while traveling.

Emergency calls are typically from a desperate relative in the United States who has suddenly learned that a family member has fallen ill or been severely injured while on vacation or conducting international business.

For relatives who have learned of a family member in critical condition, the language barrier and the long distances involved have often turned a bad situation into a horrible nightmare.

But as soon as your call is received here at Stratos Jets, 24-hours-per-day, a Spanish speaking staff member will immediately assist you to arrange your safe return to medical facilities in the United States by emergency air charter transportation.

Regardless of your situation, no matter what your needs may be, arranging for emergency evacuations or other critical, urgent travel needs is a forte here at Stratos Jets.

It could save your life.

And of course we can facilitate other travel requirements as well, caused by potential violence or social unrest, natural disasters, or an emergency family situation back at home. The bottom line is we will do whatever possible to assist you during a crisis!

For more information, give us a call at 888 472-7286 to find out more about your many options and all of our services here at Stratos Jet Charters.

And of course, no one wants to face the critical emergencies mentioned above. But if something does occur, we look forward to the opportunity to provide critical assistance during your time of great need.

Safety First

Saturday, April 18th, 2009

Sometimes you read a news article and it really makes you realize what is truly important.

And it’s never the day-to-day issues or small inconveniences that most of us worry about every day. Such was the case last Sunday, April 12.

Like me, you may have seen or read the story about the charter passenger who landed a twin-engine plane at SW Florida International Airport after the pilot died of a sudden heart attack, saving four lives in the process. Against all odds, that passenger actually had some previous flight experience, although not with a plane of that type or size.

It’s every traveler’s worst nightmare, a catastrophic problem with either the plane itself or the pilot flying it.

In many ways, the situation described in that news story is worse than a problem with the aircraft itself. At least in those situations, you (hopefully!) have a professional with years of flying experience trying to solve the problem. This is best illustrated in another recent news story, the emergency landing of a critically damaged commercial jet in the Hudson River, in which only one passenger out of 150 received a significant injury! (The actions of that heroic pilot, and that outcome, were almost miraculous.)

The point is, when you travel – for business, for pleasure, for any reason – your primary concern is getting to your destination safely. Itineraries and schedules and a myriad of other concerns can take a back seat in a HURRY to your safety and that of your family or other companions.

Which is why you should always insist upon the ARGUS mandated two pilot system.

When you charter a flight with Stratos Jets, you can be assured that your flight will have two of the most qualified and experienced pilots available; verified and approved by ARGUS or Wyvern. Although not always a mandate for a legal FAA charter, this IS a requirement for every charter arranged by Stratos Jets.

(Of course, illegal charters also can’t provide passengers with any insurance coverage, and don’t have the strict maintenance requirements of legal charters. But that’s a topic for another day!)

Of course we wish that every emergency could be avoided in the first place. But while we may not know what life will throw our way, being well prepared is always the best defense, which is why Stratos Jets takes every possible precaution to ensure your safety.

For more information, give us a call at 888 472-7286 or visit www.stratosjets.com, to find out more about the safety protocols in place here at Stratos Jet Charters. We look forward to the opportunity to assist you in arranging your next flight.

Current Economy Creates Perfect Opportunity To Purchase Your New Plane

Now Is A Great Time To Buy Your New Aircraft

February 12, 2009 – Orlando, FL

As we at Stratos Jet Charters scan the horizon within the private aircraft and charter industries, we see many of the same financial issues and pressures that are affecting the overall economy. The current economic conditions are causing a number of companies to sell off their corporate planes to slash their overhead costs, and also to escape from any potential public perception or image concerns.

This major “sell off” has resulted in the current glut of corporate aircraft clogging up the marketplace, which has driven down prices significantly. Similar to today’s housing market, it has become a buyer’s market for those looking for a new plane.

Add in the fact that interest rates are at or near historic lows, and now could be the perfect time to buy the aircraft of your choice.

But it is vital that you have proper representation when purchasing your new aircraft. And when it comes to ensuring yourself a strong negotiating partner – one that can help you get the best plane, AND at the best available price – trust Stratos.

We have the in-depth knowledge of the entire aircraft sales process required to help you find and acquire the plane that is right for you, and your budget. No one wants to make a bad purchase, and as your partner we will help you to make the proper buying decisions, to protect you from potential problems and issues down the road.

We will also be right alongside you long after the purchase – to provide you with all the assistance necessary to coordinate and manage the inevitable post-purchase expenses. Of course, you’ll also have our long-standing relationships with qualified pilots, maintenance crews and charter companies at your complete disposal.

For more information, call Stratos Jet Charters at 888 472-7286 or visit www.stratosjets.com, and find out more about how we can help you purchase the right plane, at the right price, for you.
