Explaining the Consumer Confidence and Safety Issues with Shared Flight Programs

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

In these difficult, economic times, private jet travelers may be looking for alternatives to the high cost of charter flights, but how can you be certain that you are getting the safest service at the best available price?  Over the past few years, a new method for air charter has emerged in the air charter industry known as the shared flight program.  A “shared flight” or “fractional charter” occurs when a group of travelers share all the costs and expenses of an individual charter flight.  Shared flight programs can significantly reduce the cost of private jet travel, however, they also pose serious problems for consumer confidence and safety.  Shared flight programs are not technically illegal, but aircraft operators that sell shared charter flights have been called into question for skirting FAA and DOT regulations in order to sell a charter flight.

In order to ensure passenger safety, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Department of Transportation (DOT) have established specific safety regulations and guidelines to govern different types of aircraft operations.  Shared charter flights are conducted on on-demand charter aircraft and are therefore governed by FAA Part 135 and DOT on-demand air carrier regulations.  Under these regulations, on-demand air charter flights are not allowed to be “scheduled” or arranged by aircraft operators without additional authority as a scheduled air carrier.  This means that your aircraft operator can not tell you about an available seat on a pre-arranged charter flight.  However, you are allowed to share the expense of a charter flight with other passengers, as long as the operator is not involved in that part of the booking process.  This is how aircraft operators sell shared flight programs without violating FAA and DOT on-demand air charter regulations.

Given the deceptive nature of shared flight programs, wouldn’t you prefer to work with honest, transparent aircraft operators that adhere to all FAA and DOT regulations?  An easy way to identify air charter service providers that meet the highest standards for safety and excellence is through the Air Charter Association of North America (ACANA).  ACANA is an invite-only, non-profit organization comprised of the finest air charter service providers in North America.  ACANA members promote the highest level of best practices and professionalism in order to enhance the industry as a whole.  As an ACANA member, Stratos Jet Charters ensures that its approved vendors adhere to all FAR Part 135 and DOT regulations, and we never arrange shared charter flights to ensure your personal safety.  Our goal as an ACANA member is to educate air charter consumers about the added advantage of working with honest, reliable service providers and avoiding the grey area of shared charter flights.

ACANA Promotes Best Practices and Professionalism in the Air Charter Industry

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

In recent air charter news, Stratos Jet Charters announced that Joel Thomas, president and founder of Stratos Jets, was selected as the new President of the prestigious Air Charter Association of North America (ACANA).  ACANA, an elite, non-profit organization, is comprised of the finest and most well-respected air charter service providers in North America.  ACANA’s mission is to enhance and foster the air charter industry by promoting best practices and professionalism, representing ACANA members’ collective regulatory interests, and educating consumers about the benefits of private aviation.

Over the next few weeks, we at Stratos Jets would like to take the opportunity to explain the mission of ACANA and the role it plays in promoting a safer and better air charter experience for consumers.  In this week’s article, we would like to turn our attention to the first part of ACANA’s mission statement – promoting best practices and professionalism in the air charter industry.

Part 1 of our weekly series outlining the first part of the mission and vision of ACANA:

As with any free-market industry, air charter consumers have a myriad of choices when it comes to selecting a private jet charter service provider to work with.  A private jet traveler looking to charter a jet from Los Angeles to New York, for example, will have little difficulty in receiving a price and an option for their trip.  Unfortunately, determining the safety and quality of the aircraft along with the reputation of the air carrier is a much different matter.  With so many private jet charter brokers and operators to choose from, how can you, as a consumer, really be certain that you are working with the safest, most reputable private jet charter service in the industry?

That’s where ACANA comes in.  As we mentioned earlier in this article, the founding principle of ACANA is to promote best practices and professionalism to air charter service providers in the industry.  The 19 members of ACANA adhere to the highest standards of ethics and integrity to accomplish their goal of promoting best practices and professionalism to other service providers in the industry.  As a result, air charter consumers who choose to work with ACANA members have the added advantage of knowing that their charter service provider has met with the highest standards of safety, integrity and excellence in the industry.

At Stratos Jet Charters, we have furthered ACANA’s mission of promoting best practices and excellence by implementing the Stratos Jets’ Approved Vendor Program.  This program provides our clients with the same quality assurance they have come to expect from ACANA members.  The Approved Vendor Program is an invite-only organization that is comprised of the finest private aircraft and air carriers in the world.  Through our approved vendor network, we have access to the safest and most highly-maintained aircraft and in the industry.  Our approved vendors adhere to Federal Aviation Administration Part 135 and DOT regulations along with the safety requirements set forth by our company.  Our air charter agents utilize an ARG/US or Wyvern third-party safety audit to ensure that these safety requirements are met before inviting a vendor to join our exclusive network.

By continuing to promote best practices and professionalism, Stratos Jet Charters and other ACANA members can continually provide consumers with the best charter flight service possible.  To learn more about Stratos Jets’ approved vendor program or to arrange a charter flight, please contact Stratos Jets at 1.888.478.7286.

Private Jet Charter Flights for Stranded Carnival Splendor Passengers

Thursday, November 11th, 2010

Stratos Jet Charters Inc., a worldwide air charter agency, announced today that it is now offering immediate one-way private jet charter service from San Diego and Long Beach, California for passengers disembarking the disabled Carnival Splendor cruise ship.

The Carnival Splendor has been adrift at sea since Monday, after a fire broke out, effectively cutting off the ship’s power supply. The 3,299 passengers onboard the ship were left without hot food, air conditioning and hot water for three days, until tug boats dragged the luxury liner to the San Diego port Thursday afternoon.

According to recent news reports, the Carnival Splendor is now docked at the San Diego port and officials are now in the lengthy process of disembarking thousands of  passengers off of the ship. As soon as passengers reach the port, they will either be transported back to Long Beach, California, the departure point of the cruise, or provided hotel accommodations in San Diego.

In response to the cruise ship disaster, Stratos Jet Charters is now offering Carnival Splendor passengers immediate air charter transportation out of San Diego and Long Beach to any destination in the world. Stratos Jets air charter agents specialize in providing multiple aircraft options that can accommodate the specific needs of individuals and families of different sizes.

According to Joel Thomas, Stratos Jets President, his air charter coordinators have access the safest and most comfortable turboprop, light, mid-size and heavy jet aircraft in the San Diego (SDM) and Long Beach (LGB) areas. Thomas says that his air charter agents have been specifically trained to handle all last-minute, ASAP requests and can arrange a jet charter flight out of San Diego or Long Beach with as little as four hours notice.

Due to the large volume of stranded travelers, Thomas advises passengers to book their jet charter flights as soon as possible to ensure aircraft availability and avoid long lines and hassles at commercial airports.

Jet Charter Flights to Sporting Events

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

As we head into the month of November, now is the time to start planning your jet charter flights to all your favorite sporting events this season. If you’re as big of a “sports nut” as everyone here is at Stratos Jet Charters, you’re probably planning on chartering a private jet to several sporting events this year.

At Stratos Jet Charters, we are more than happy to assist you with arranging the safest and most luxurious private jet charter flights to your favorite sporting events. However, we would also like to take this opportunity to inform you about a few things that could affect your experience at the game. For added convenience, we’ve compiled a list of the top three things you need to know before chartering a private jet to a sporting event.

1. Repositioning Fees

If you are planning your next charter flight to a college sports game, keep in mind that many college football and basketball games are located in small towns and rural areas. Although small towns and cities are home to several of the finest college teams in America, they are not home to a large number of private charter aircraft. For example, University of Alabama’s Crimson Tides games are located in the small town of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where very few private aircraft are located.

This means that a private aircraft may have to move, or “reposition,” from its home base to the location of your destination in order to conduct your charter flight. Should this occur, you may see an increase in cost for your charter flight due to additional repositioning fees. The best way to avoid costly repositioning fees is to work with Stratos Jet Charters air charter agents who can find all the relevant aircraft in your area that can accommodate your charter flight request.

2. Pilot Duty Restrictions

If you plan on flying to a sporting event and returning home on the same day, you need to understand how charter pilot duty restrictions can affect your charter flight. The Federal Aviation Administration imposes certain rest restrictions on pilots to keep them fully awake and alert during flight. These restrictions were implemented by the FAA to ensure your safety on every corporate charter flight.

These requirements, referred to as “pilot duty restrictions,” restrict the number of hours a pilot can fly during a 14-hour work period, called a “duty day.” Currently, air charter pilots can fly 10 consecutive hours without a rest period on any given duty day. Duty day begins one hour before departure and ends one hour after pilots land at their final destination.

It’s important to understand that charter pilots must conduct all pre-flight and post-flight operations operations in addition to any repositioning during the 14-hour period. Pre-flight and post-flight operations usually take about an hour and a half to complete, which can become a time issue for your, should your game go into overtime.

Repositioning can also limit the amount of time you have at a game. Let’s say your three-hour charter flight is scheduled to leave at 1 p.m., but your pilots repositioned for one hour to your airport. The pilots’ duty day would have actually begin at 11 a.m., meaning you need to return to the airport before 9 p.m. in order to meet with your pilots’ duty restrictions.

To avoid leaving the game early, you can always plan on staying overnight at the game. Many private jet travelers feel that staying at the game longer is worth the additional cost of overnighting the aircraft.

3. Aircraft Availability

As a dedicated sports fan, you know that conference championship games, bowl games and playoffs are highly-attended sporting events. If you plan on attending one of these games this year, we highly recommend that you book your private jet charter flight at least one week in advance, to secure your aircraft. Major sporting events, such as the NCAA March Madness playoffs and Superbowl Sunday, are “peak travel periods” for private charter flights. This means that hundreds of jet charter buyers will travel to one destination at the same time, which reduces the number of private aircraft available for last-minute charter flight bookings. The high demand for jet charter flights can also dramatically inflate the price of your charter flight. By booking early, you can avoid higher prices and reserve the best aircraft for your individual charter flight. Another advantage of booking early is that you can avoid inflated, last-minute ground transfer fees (as high as $1,500 in some cases) for luxury ground transportation services from the airport to the stadium.

Booking Early for Fall, Winter and Holiday Jet Charter Travel

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

With the start of the holiday season right around the corner, now is the best time to start planning your jet charter flights to your fall and winter destinations.  It may seem a little early to start thinking about your holiday travel plans, but the process of finding and booking a charter flight will become much more difficult over the next few weeks.  As the weather turns colder this fall, the demand for jet charter flights will increase, which could affect the pricing and availability of your charter flight.

During the chilly fall and winter months, the arrival of inclement weather in the Northeast, Midwest and Pacific Northwest causes hundreds of commercial flight delays and cancellations.  Commercial flights are often delayed or canceled due to inclement weather, such as thick fog, heavy snow or ice.  Private jet aircraft, however, can avoid aviation weather conditions by utilizing smaller, alternative airports with milder weather conditions in the fall and winter.  The reliability and added safety of private jet charter often adds to the demand for charter flights, significantly lowering the number of aircraft available for your charter flight.

The increase in personal travel over the holiday season also increases the demand for jet charter during the fall and winter.  Important holidays, such as Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day, are notoriously busy travel periods for private jet charter.  Many private jet travelers book their charter flights weeks in advance to secure a charter aircraft for the holiday season.  These travelers rely on the safety, flexibility and security of jet charter flights to ensure that they reach their destinations safely and on-time during the holidays.

BOOK EARLY THROUGH STRATOS JET CHARTERS

Before the weather turns cold this fall, book your charter flight today through Stratos Jet Charters.  Our team of “cold weather experts”  can find the safest and most relevant aircraft for your charter flight at the best available price.  Our air charter agents can provide jet charter service on multiple private aircraft that are well-equipped for cold weather flying.  By booking early through Stratos Jets, you can ensure the safety of you and your loved ones this fall and winter.

With this philosophy in mind, Stratos Jets is proud to announce its recent invitation to join the prestigious Air Charter Association of North America (ACANA).  ACANA, a non-profit organization, was founded by several of the finest and most well-established air charter service providers in North America.  The mission of ACANA is to set the benchmark for professionalism and excellence in the air charter market.  As an ACANA member, Stratos Jets will join 12 of the most prestigious air charter service providers to help promote best practices in the industry.

In order to become an official ACANA member, Stratos Jets was required to adhere to a stringent set of membership criteria.  These criteria were set forth to distinguish the most reputable air charter companies from the average charter brokerage.  Our air charter agency was required to demonstrate its financial stability, longevity, industry presence, ethical business practices and compliance with Department of Transportation and Federal Aviation Administration regulations.
