The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Men's Basketball Championship, often called March Madness or the “Big Dance”, is a single elimination tournament held each spring in the US. The tournament features 65 Division I (the highest designation) college basketball teams; both conference champions who are given automatic bids, and “at-large” selections, which are chosen each year by committee. There is a similar Championship tournament held for women’s basketball teams during the same period. The competition began in 1939, and has evolved into one of the nation’s most prominent and exciting sporting events. In the final weekend of the tourney, the semifinals match-up the surviving teams from each region (the Final Four), which then leads to the national championship game. (Division I schools not selected to play in the NCAA tournament may still be picked to play in the NIT, NAIA and CBI basketball competitions instead.) With 11 national titles, UCLA holds the record for the most NCAA Championships. The University of Kentucky is second, with 7 titles; North Carolina and Indiana are tied for third, with 5 titles each.
