Formerly known as the “World Championship Series”, the NBA Finals crown the champion for the league’s season ending in June. The league’s thirty franchises compete throughout the grueling 82-game regular season in hopes of making the cut for the playoffs. In a seeded, best-of-seven series format, the team with the better regular season record gains home-court advantage for the first two and last two games (if needed). The eight teams in the East and West battle until a winner is produced to represent each conference in the Finals. The revolving Championship trophy awarded to the winning team is the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy, named after the former NBA commissioner. Although there are no universal traditions for the Finals, there are often common rivalries and matchups that have added a great element to the game over the years, and created a great chemistry between the players and fans.
