The Major League Baseball All-Star Game is also known fondly known as the "Midsummer Classic". This annual baseball game is between best players from the National League vs. those of the American League, as voted on by the fans, players, coaches and managers. Always a spectacle, the game has taken on even greater meaning since 2003, when a controversial new incentive was offered – the league that wins the game also gains home-field advantage in the World Series later that year. The All-Star Game usually occurs in early to mid-July, and marks the symbolic halfway point in the Major League season. The game is typically played on a Tuesday, with no regular-season games scheduled on the day before or after. These are the only 2 calendar days in the year in which no regular or preseason games in any of the four main American professional sports leagues (baseball, football, basketball and hockey) take place. Each year a different MLB city is selected as host of the All-Star game, usually years in advance. Cities that feature new ballparks, or conversely, stadiums scheduled for demolition, are often asked to host the game. The 2010 game will be played at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, CA; in 2011 the game is scheduled to be played at Chase Field in Phoenix, AZ, home of the Diamondbacks.The festivities of All-Star week have come to include the very popular Home Run Derby competition, usually held the evening prior to the game, and also a Legends Softball Game and Future Stars (rookie) Game. Host cities usually work quite hard to provide other entertainment venues and activities during the game week.
