Constructed in 1942, more than 300 families had to relocate from the area to make room for the basse. Named for General John Bell Hood, who served the Confederate Army during the Civil War, Fort Hood is primarily used for training and testing new tactics and equipment. During the Vietnam War, Fort Hood also became a hotspot of anti-war activity. Despite being the third-largest army base, it is the largest armored post with an active-duty military.
