If you’re looking to race in or watch a superyacht regatta that combines top-quality sailing with a slate full of colorful social events, the Candy Store Cup is the sweetest gig going. Stratos Jet Charters arranges charter flights to Newport so you won’t miss out on this prestigious sporting event in Rhode Island. Unlike other yachting races, the Candy Store Cup is more intimate in scale. This gives spectators an opportunity to witness some of the world’s most technologically sophisticated sailing yachts up close, while also rubbing elbows with the crews that sail them at Newport Shipyard, the regatta's headquarters. While the Candy Store Cup is open to superyachts measuring 90 feet LOA (overall length), some entries can be twice that. This makes for an impressive sight along the Rhode Island coastline on race days. Some of the common competing vessel types include:
- Sloop
- Ketch
- Yawl
- Schooner
The 2019 event is scheduled to start on Thursday, July 25 and conclude on Saturday, July 27.
A Test of Skill and Courage
Bequia, a 92-foot yawl competing in Class B, claimed the overall title back in 2016 and 2017 after three tightly contested days of racing. Each day of this event features a different course, which ranged from 12 to 26 miles. Conditions off the coast of Rhode Island can be extremely unpredictable, which was the case in 2017. The winds were medium on the first day and light on the second, before reaching gusts of up to 30 knots on the final outing. This tested both the skill and courage of the entrants. Co-hosted by Bannister’s Wharf and Newport Shipyard, the Candy Store Cup features a host of social gatherings.
