Bern, the charming capital of Switzerland, enchants visitors with its medieval old town and scenic views of the Aare River. Its mix of historic architecture and laid-back atmosphere makes it a perfect stop for culture and nature lovers alike.
Bern is an historically important city in Switzerland. The Old Town Center of Bern is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the city itself is regarded as the de facto capital (Switzerland has yet to name an official capital). The official language in Bern is German and most speak Bernese German, but Italian and French are also commonly spoken here. In the early 20th century, Albert Einstein lived in an apartment in Bern on Kramgasses [street]. Continually voted as one of the world’s best cities in terms of quality of life, Bern lies on the Swiss Plateau, just west of the country’s geographical center.
Popular sights in Bern include Zytgologge, a medieval clock tower with a moving puppet show; the Munster, a 15th century Gothic Cathedral; and The Federal Palace, which houses the national parliament. Some favorite spots for dining in Bern include Il Grissino, a packed-to-the-brim pizza joint with a lively atmosphere and savory pizzas and pastas. Locals and visitors alike find Altes Tramadepot to be one of the hottest spots in Bern. This popular microbrewery offers a bistro-styled menu and rich brews. Stop by Stauffacher and experience an intricate library stocked with both English and Swiss literature. The Lorenzini is a network of wine bars and an Italian restaurant that attracts young professionals on lunch break and offers alfresco dining perfect for people watching. Stay at Bellevue Palace, where old-world charm meets sophistication and modern technology. Each of its 129 suites has a unique view of the historic old town, the tranquil courtyard, the houses of Parliament, or the Alpine mountains. Other fine accommodations in Bern include Hotel Allegro Bern, and Solis Cambrian Hotel and Spa in nearby Adelboden. If you’re into sports, Bern is a major hockey town, and home to SC Bern of the top-tier National League. Known for their passionate fans, the team continually enjoys the highest attendance rates of any club team in Europe. Danny Morejon is a great facilitator who made this urgent flight possible within a matter of hours. He is also a good advocate for Stratos. Had it not been for the communication I had with him a few weeks ago...
