General Information

Situated in the far western corner of Texas on the border with Mexico, El Paso sit on the Rio Grande River and is located within a desert landscape with Franklin Mountain sitting over the horizon. Once located within Mexico’s borders, the area was mostly used for agriculture before the Texan Revolution, when the railway and the oil boom made El Paso a major commercial center. Today, El Paso has a diversified economy from petroleum and gas operations, food production, and mining. The city is a leader in copper production with a custom copper lead smelter and an electrolytic copper refinery. El Paso is also the location of Fort Bliss, home of the U.S. Army Air Defense Center. Tourism is also popular, with El Paso serving as a gateway into Juárez and the Mexican Interior as well as to other scenic areas of the US. Downtown El Paso is known for its restored adobe buildings, winding streets and excellent restaurants and shops.

Things to do in El Paso

There is an abundance of museums in El Paso, where you can learn about various periods of history. Old Ironsides Museum features exhibition on the history on US air defense. The tour also covers the 1st Armored Division, The Holocaust, and Fort Bliss and offers guests the opportunity to sit in and experience old military tanks and helicopters that were used in combat. Not only are military vehicles displayed, but also ancient military artillery, including missiles used during the Korean War Although the Holocaust is briefly covered at the Old Ironsides Museum, the El Paso Holocaust Museum goes into greater detail on the tragic events that occurred in the Second World War. Another remarkable museum situated between El Paso and Alamogordo on Highway 54 is the National Border Patrol Museum, which educates visitors on how illegal immigrants attempt to enter the US and all the measures border patrol agents take in order to prevent it. Once El Paso’s Museum tours are completed, take a journey to Franklin Mountains State Park, which holds the record of being the largest urban park in the US. The mountain reaches an alpine altitude of 7,192 ft. and can be seen from 60 miles in any direction and carries approximately 24,000 acres of beautiful terrain, with hiking and camping available. At night, the sky comes alive with glistening stars and a moonlight that will take your breath away. El Paso is also home to a number of top-rated golf courses, including Butterfield and Painted Dunes Desert Golf Course. Painted Dunes offers 27 different holes, giving you a variety of fairways that stand at a par 72. El Paso is also well known for hosting the annual NCAA Hyundai Sun Bowl and the Borderland Derby horse race in Sunland Park.
