General Information

An island of casual sophistication, Eleuthera is part of the Bahamas archipelago. This long, thin island offers a perfect Caribbean escape. It features isolated communities, well-developed resorts, rocky bluffs, low-lying wetlands and massive coral reefs, perfect for diving. The fourth most populated island of the Bahamas, most of Eleuthera’s 11,000 residents that are not involved in the tourism industry either fish or farm the island’s biggest export. Said to produce some of the sweetest pineapples in the world, Eleuthera’s pineapple farming industry began in and around Gregory Town in the 18th century when British Loyalists began to settle on the island. However, major exportation did not happen until the 1800s, with the opening of the first canning factory in Governor’s Harbor. The British influence can also be found in the quaint colonial-style buildings and white columned homes that line Eleuthera’s narrow streets.

Things to Do in Eleuthera

Experience Eleuthera’s pineapple growing industry by taking a tour of Gregory Town and the nearby pineapple fields. Also known as Pineapple City, Gregory Town is known for its pastel painted cottages and deep blue harbour and is also the site of the annual Pineapple Festival, which takes place over the Bahamas Labor day weekend in late-May/early-June.   Activities include:

You can access the tiny island, which measures only 3 square miles, by water taxi from the northeastern side of Eleuthera.
