During the day you’ll find happy old men playing dominos in the plaza and local children kicking around a ball. By nighttime, however, the streets turn into a buzzing social nightlife scene. The Ria Formosa nature park is by far the best attraction in the area. This collection of saltwater lagoons and mudflats are a haven for migratory birds and wildlife. Along with nearly 30,000 bird species, you’ll see woodlands, marshes, fresh-water lagoons, barrier islands, islets, tidal flats, saltpans and dunes. The island beaches just off the coast of Faro are definitely worth the cost of chartering a boat. Since that’s the only way to reach them, they are usually free from visitors and completely unspoiled. For a change of pace, strap on your favourite shoes and head in the opposite direction of the beaches. Within the city limits lie some of Faro’s most iconic and historic buildings. Built in the middle of the 18th century, the Igreja do Carmo church demonstrates true Portuguese baroque architecture featuring the handiwork of some of the best sculptors in the region. The Carmelite Church and the Chapel of bones are also worth a visit.
