General Information
Known as “Vehicle City,” Flint is located along the Flint River in the state of Michigan. The birthplace of General Motors way back in 1908, and the former home of the massive automobile manufacturing complex known as Buick City, Flint has had some economic and environmental struggles since the 2008 financial crisis. However, the city is starting to rebound, with a number of the city’s industrial spaces starting to see life again and new businesses opening their doors. Besides industry, Flint is also an educational hub. There are 25 colleges within 50 miles of the city, with the closest being Kettering University. Some other notable education institutes include:

Located next to the cultural center is the Applewood Estate, a gentleman’s farm built in 1916 for the co-founder of General Motors, Charles Stewart Mott. The home and extensively landscaped grounds —open to the public from May through October— encompass approximately 34 acres, including an orchard with 29 varieties of heritage apples. For delicious Michigan apples and other fresh produce, meats, baked goods, and wares, make sure to visit the Flint Farmers’ Market, which has been recognized as one of the American Planning Association’s Great Public Spaces in America. Recently relocated back to its original Union Street building downtown, the market is open year round and features an atrium where you can enjoy lunch, a rooftop bar, demo kitchen, and an art gallery.
