Things to Do on Hilton Head Island

There are literally dozens of outdoor sightseeing and recreation opportunities after arriving on flights to Hilton Head Island, SC. The Harbour Town Lighthouse and Museum, which marks the southwest tip of the island, is located on the 18th hole of the Harbour Town Golf Links and is the first privately financed lighthouse built since the early 1800s. It not only serves as a beacon for ships entering the island’s Yacht Basin, the museum, which is incorporated into the lighthouse, features historical artefacts and photos showing the rich history of Hilton Head. For more history, visit the Coastal Discovery Museum, which features heritage buildings, trees and themed gardens. The Sea Pines Forest Preserve is a protected nature area and home to the Sea Pines Shell Ring, which is made up of thousands of oyster, clam and mussel shells that were deposited by the island’s indigenous people more than 4,000 years ago. Listed as a National Historic Site, the shells make up a circular shape that is more than 150 feet in diameter. While at the preserve, you can also explore along woodland trails, wetland boardwalks, bridle paths, bridges, and fishing docks. Located a mile north of the preserve is Coligny Beach Park, a beautiful oceanside park that has landscaped walking and biking paths, a playground and beach equipment rentals. To see some of the island’s wildlife, a visit to the Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge is recommended. Located between the island and mainland, the salt marsh is home to deer, alligators and birds.
