Things to Do in Lisbon
The Belém area is a perfect place to start. Stroll through the Jardim da Praça do Império, Europe’s biggest plaza. Nearby, the gorgeous Jerónimos Monastery houses two museums: the Museu de Marinha, devoted to the golden age of navigators, and the Museu Nacional de Arqueologia, with Roman mosaics and bronze-age artifacts. Wrap up your exploration with a visit to the Torre de Belém, a 16th-century tower on the sparkling waterfront, recognized as a UNESCO world heritage site. Hit the beach! It’s easy to get to the beaches of Estoril and Cascais by train and to the Costa da Caparica by ferry and bus. Or try a surf tour company! Surf instructors pick you up at your hotel, provide you with a board, wetsuit and instruction, and take you to a surfing beach appropriate for your level of experience. Lisbon is made for adventurers of all ages, with waterparks, canopy hanging bridges, and even a HippoTrip amphibious bus tour! Of particular note are the wooden-hulled frigate warship D. Fernando II e Glória, and the Oceanário de Lisboa Aquarium. Get a great view of the city as you and the kids explore Lisbon’s most famous historic castle, Castelo de São Jorge. You could build sandcastles one day and then explore real castles the next day in Lisbon!
