Lucerne is a picturesque Swiss city set against a backdrop of mountains and a stunning lake. Its charming old town, historic wooden bridges, and nearby Alpine adventures make it a dream destination.
Lucerne sits on the shore of Lake Lucerne near the snow-capped mountains of Mount Pilatus and the Swiss Alps south of Zurich and west of the Liechtenstein border. Located in the German-speaking region of Switzerland, it is known for its medieval architecture found in its Altstadt (Old Town). Bordered on the north by the 14th century Museggmauer (Musegg Wall), the city was founded around 840 AD, and became important as a trading center in the 14th century after the opening of the St. Gotthard Pass. Today, Lucerne is a major transportation hub into Greater Switzerland and is also one of the most popular tourist attractions in Switzerland.
Visitors to Lucerne typically head toward the Lion Monument near Lowenplatz. It was carved by Bertel Thorvaldsen to honor the Swiss guards massacred during the French Revolution Take a stroll along Lucerne’s most famous landmark, the covered wooden Chapel bridge (Kapellbrücke), which crosses the Reuss River and dates back to the 14th century. It is marked by a stone water tower with a roof decorated by 17th-century art. Lucerne’s Altstadt is home to fairy-tale-like timber framed and colorful mural painted buildings. The Kornmarkt is home to the Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall) as well as many fine shops, restaurants and cafés. Enjoy a fine meal and see the sights while cruising by boat around the 23.5-mile long Lake Luzern. There are a number of different boat trips available, including round trips from Lucerne to Meggen as well as single trips from Lucerne to Flüelen. A boat trip to Alpnachstad will take you to the base of Mount Pilatus, where you can travel up to its summit by cable car and gondola to see breath taking views of Lucerne and the surrounding mountains. Another option is to take a cogwheel train up to the Mount Rigi. Each year, the streets of Lucerne come alive for the Winter Carnival (Fasnacht). Throughout the barrios, people put on outrageous costumes and parade through the city. Live music and celebrations are held nightly. Fasnacht begins the Thursday before Ash Wednesday and ends with a flourish on Fat Tuesday. Major Parades are held on Dirty Thursday and Fat Monday.

As far as I can tell the flight was great. My nephew, his wife and their dog flew from California to Guam for a move. The airport they flew from was changed the day prior to departure due to weather....
