01

General Information

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, 30 miles northwest of London, Luton houses a population of roughly 250,000. Home to one of Britain’s major airports, the town is also the headquarters of the Luton Town Football Club “The Hatters”, which is part of the English Football League One. Luton was once known for its hat making, dating back to the 18th century. In the 1930s, it is said the town produced as many as 70 million hats a year. Luton is also the base of the University of Bedfordshire, giving its pubs, restaurants and sporting events a uniquely college-town feel.

Things to Do in Luton

One of Luton’s greatest draws is the Luton Carnival, which takes place on the bank holiday late in May. The carnival attracts approximately 140,000 people annually and is the largest carnival in Britain. Luton has recently made attempts to expand its retail economy with renovations to its iconic shopping centre, The Mall. Originally built in the late 1960s, The Mall was improved in 2011 to include a leisure/event park and numerous restaurants and cafes. Located inside The Mall, The Market is the place to find local fishmongers, butchers and farmers. For those looking to explore the history of this ancient hamlet, there’s no better spot than the Stockwood Discovery Centre, which features eclectic local history displays, a horse-drawn carriage collection and a sculpture garden. While there, visit Stockwood Park, home of the Farley Hill estate, extensive golfing facilities and formal gardens. Located in a Victorian-era mansion in Wardown Park is the Wardown Park Museum, which features local history collections and revolving exhibitions. Luton’s  newest arts and cultural venue is the Hat Factory. This collection of clubs, theaters, classes and galleries operates out of one of Luton’s iconic hat factories and is a popular spot for vacationers and locals alike.
