About Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is a mystical mountaintop citadel, where ancient Incan stonework and mist-shrouded peaks create a breathtaking fusion of history and nature. Hidden for centuries above the Sacred Valley, its terraces, temples, and dramatic vistas feel like stepping into another world. Whether reached by train or the iconic Inca Trail, visiting Machu Picchu is a soul-stirring journey that lingers long after the clouds clear.

01

General Information

Often called the “Lost City of the Incas”, Machu Picchu was unknown to the world until 1911, when American archaeologist Hiram Bingham visited nearby indigenous farmers and learned of the ancient city’s existence. Bingham went on to bring international attention to this discovery, and today, Machu Picchu is one of the most popular tourist destinations on Earth.

This ancient city was essentially lost to outsiders for one key, fortunate reason. When Spanish conquistadors overran the surrounding area in 1532, as a mission of the Spanish Conquest, they didn’t realize Machu Picchu was there. Although abandoned upon the Conquest, the city is so well-hidden in the Andes that it survived colonization efforts completely untouched.

Most archaeologists believe the Incans constructed Machu Picchu around 1450. The advanced city was likely built as a luxurious estate for the Inca emperor Pachacuti. It’s estimated that about 1,200 people could have inhabited the region, but many historians have also concluded that Machu Picchu was mainly used as a private retreat for Incan rulers.

Taking a Trip to Machu Picchu

When you take a private jet charter to Machu Picchu, you have the opportunity to personally see the stunning, advanced architecture developed by the ancient Incan Empire. Machu Picchu is made up of approximately 200 structures, divided into three distinct zones: religious at the top, agricultural at the bottom, and urban in the center. Arguably the most fascinating aspect of this high-mountain city is that these structures intricately blend in with their natural surroundings – a steep ridge, lined with ascending stone terraces.

Things to Do Before you can see the city, you’ll have to get there. Your jet charter to Machu Picchu will land you in a nearby Peruvian airport, and from here, you have three main options to reach the ancient ruins:

  • Hike the Inca Trail (requires advanced booking). This is the most popular way to reach Machu Picchu from the city of Cuzco. It takes two to five days to hike the trail. Go prepared!
  • Hike a different trail. Options include the Salkantay trek and the Choquequirao trek.
  • Take a train from Cuzco or Ollantaytambo to the ancient ruins.

Although there are many interesting sites to visit in Machu Picchu, three significant locations are most popular: the Intihuatana, the Temple of the Sun, and the Temple of the Three Windows. All three structures reside in the Sacred District of Machu Picchu, as named by modern archaeologists. The Intihuatana is a large ritual stone at the summit of the city. Literally “the hitching post of the sun”, this stone was placed by the Incans to work as a sun dial. Archaeologists speculate that it was used to study astronomy and to calculate the passage of time. Although every Incan city would have had a similar sun-dial stone, the Intihuatana is the only one to have survived the Spanish Conquest. Together with the Temple of the Three Windows, the Temple of the Sun represents the most refined architecture created by the Incans. Gigantic polyhedrons were carved and arranged so precisely that any error comes only within less than a millimeter.

Arranging a Private Jet Charter to Machu Picchu

Because the Incan ruins are such a popular tourist destination, it’s crucial to arrange your jet charter to Machu Picchu well in advance of your actual flight. Stratos Jet Charters can prepare private flights with as little as four hours’ notice, but we know that Machu Picchu is one of the toughest global attractions to just drop in on. Call us earlier than later at (888) 593-9066, and make sure your jet charter to Machu Picchu is a seamless, hassle-free experience. This is important because in July 2011, the Dirección Desconcentrada de Cultura de Cusco (DRC) decided that in order to protect the ancient ruins from drowning in tourists, only 2,500 visitors per day would be allowed to enter the citadel of Machu Picchu. Even more restricted is the entrance to Huayna Picchu (within the citadel), open to only 400 visitors per day at only two set times, 7am and 10am. Currently, the city is most visited from June through August, typically between 10am and 2pm. During this high season, at least 2,500 people visit Machu Picchu on a daily basis. To provide a hassle-free trip, Stratos Jet Charters offers a full-service concierge that can handle all your travel requirements, such as purchasing your tickets to the citadel in advance, arranging luxury ground transportation for you and your party, making hotel and restaurant reservations, prepping in-flight catering, and so much more. When taking a jet charter to Machu Picchu, the closest airport is the Teniente Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport (CUZ), which is located in Cuzco, the main access point to Machu Picchu. Our private flight advisors at Stratos Jet Charters know how to deliver the best jet aircraft for your trip, always at the most competitive jet charter prices available. We were thoroughly impressed with all aspects of these operations. If at all possible, a method to protect the identity of passengers might be developed (whereby TSA rules are still met). If such a method already exists, my clients would...
