About Milan

Milan is a global fashion capital known for its elegant architecture, historic landmarks, and world-class shopping. Visitors can admire the stunning Duomo, explore art galleries, and savor authentic Italian cuisine.

01

General Information

The largest economic power in Italy, Milan is the home of the Italian Stock Exchange, the nation’s largest bank, and numerous multinational companies. A city built on fashion, Milan’s name is derived from the Italian word for luxury apparel. Textile manufacturing and the making of luxury goods has been a way of life here since the Middle Ages. Today, many travel to Milan to peruse the boutiques, whether it’s to get a hold of the latest Fendi purse or purchase a pair of genuine Italian leather shoes. Haute couture, or alta moda as the Italians call it, is celebrated here every year when the Milan fashion houses of Armani, Dolce & Gabana, Prada, Versace, Valentino, and others parade their latest wears on the runway.

Things to Do in Milan

The offshoot of Milan’s fashion industry is apparent as you walk around the city’s sleek streets, offering everything from high-end retail shops to fine dining restaurants serving up classic Milanese delicacies such as risotto, ossobuco, and cotoletta. Those who love fashion will want to visit during Milan Fashion Week, which is actually held twice a year in winter and fall. The week usually includes 40 shows held in unique venues around town, including some of Milan’s grand palazzos (palaces). Besides modern extravagances, there is no shortage of cultural or historic sites to see while in Milan. In the city centre is the gothic Duomo di Milano cathedral, which took more than 600 years to complete and is one of the largest cathedrals in the world. About a 20 minute walk west is the convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, where the famous Leonardo da Vinci mural of The Last Supper is housed. Milan houses other important Italian artworks, many of which can be found in the Pinacoteca di Brera. Housed in a palazzo once used by Napoleon, you can find medieval and Renaissance artworks from mostly Northern Italy here. A visit to Milan would not be complete without a visit to La Scala, which is the nickname for the Teatro alla Scalla. One of the world’s most famous opera houses, the lavish 18th century theater features a museum and library and has been the site of many world premieres of famed operas by Rossini, Puccini, Donizetti, Verdi and others. All of Italy’s most famous opera singers have performed here, and you can still catch an operatic or ballet performance to this day. Besides Milan’s many palazzos, a visit to the Castello Sforzesco in Sempione Park takes you to a 15th century fortress built by the Duke of Milan Francesco Sforza. Severely damaged during the Second World War, it has since been restored and houses several of the city’s museums and art collections.
