General Infromation
Located on the Pacific Coast of western California, on a peninsula at the southern end of Monterey Bay, Monterey was settled by Spain in the 18th century. It became the capital of California after it was claimed by the United States, and was the signing place of the state constitution. Monterey’s economy is primarily supported by tourism and also by the military, being home to the Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center and the Army’s Defense Language Institute, among other installations.
