Things to Do in Monticello, NY
Most people who stay or visit Monticello head out to the Catskills. With more than 30 peaks that are more than 3,500 feet high, the area is known for its serene beauty, colourful foliage, and wildlife. The highest peak, Slide Mountain, is a 50-minute drive north of Monticello and is popular with hikers attempting to reach its 4,180 ft. summit. Another popular attraction is the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, an 11.9-mile drive west of Monticello. Home to the Monticello Casino & Raceway, which features a casino with slot machines and a horseracing track, Monticello is also known for its historic homes and buildings. Some of those include:
- The Bennett Family House, built in 1880, which is notable for its gabled roof and ornate period interior.
- Chevro Ahavath Zion Synagogue, built in 1952, which is believed to stand on the foundation of a synagogue built in 1933 that was destroyed by fire.
- The Rialto Theater building, which sits on the Miller and Washington block, originally built in 1921. It recently underwent a renovation.
- John's Episcopal Church and Rectory, built between 1879 and 1881. It features a tall, engaged corner three-stage entrance and crenelated tower.
