General Information

Located in the Santa Clara Valley in the San Francisco Bay area near Silicon Valley, the city of Palo Alto is known primarily as a university and high-tech town, with Stanford University campus buildings located within the city limits. The university came to be known as Stanford after Leland Stanford, a farmer and businessman who raised and trained racehorses in Palo Alto. After their son died of typhoid fever, Stanford and his wife, Jane, established a university for the children of California. It opened in 1891, and offered free tuition to poor students, including future US president Herbert Hoover.
