San Luis Obispo, affectionately known as SLO, is a laid-back Central Coast gem where Spanish colonial charm meets modern California cool. Stroll through its vibrant downtown filled with boutique shops, farm-to-table eateries, and the quirky Bubblegum Alley, or unwind with panoramic views on hikes like Bishop Peak. From coastal vineyards to sunset-lit beaches, SLO offers the perfect blend of relaxation, adventure, and content-ready beauty for any travel storyteller.
The city of San Luis Obispo is built on the site of one of California’s oldest Franciscan missions and is originally named after a 13th century saint and bishop, Louis of Toulouse. In 1772, a Spanish Franciscan named Junipero Serra decided to build this Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa in the area called “Cañada de Los Osos” (The Valley of the Bears). Here the climate was mild and the Chumash people were kind and friendly, sharing their abundant supplies of food and water.
Things changed after the Mexicans won their independence from Spain in 1821. By the mid 1830s, the Spanish Franciscans were expelled, and the areas settled by them became more inclusive of all religions. Not long after this, the area earned a new name, “Barrio del Tigre” (Tiger Town) for its lawlessness, playing a part in what became known as the “Wild West.”
Today, that history is carefully preserved at the original Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, the San Luis Obispo County Historical Museum and the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art.

In town, settle into a seat at the historic 1940s Art Deco Fremont Theater that still plays first-run movies. Or, if you’re visiting during the San Luis Obispo International Film Festival, you can take cinematic pleasure in the more modern Palm Theatre.
Some other unique sites include the famous “Bubblegum Alley” where you can just leave your chewed bubblegum in the same place where millions of other people have been leaving theirs since the 1960s. Solve the mysteries of the mysterious “underground city” and cruise the above ground streets with the “Bike Happening,” a themed bicycle ride on the first Thursday of every month after the evening Farmer’s Market.
