In 1911, a small community of Lutheran Danes from the mid-west travelled further west and collectively bought nearly 9,000 acres from a local rancher and called it ‘Solvang,’ Danish for “sunny field.” The new settlement included what was once the Mission Santa Inés (before the Mexican War of Independence and the succeeding Secularization Laws appropriated Spanish Mission lands and reassigned them to the authority of local ranchers).
