General Information
In northern Indiana, the south bend of the St. Joseph river played an integral role in the developing industry and economy of what would be aptly named, South Bend. River travel aided heavy industrial development for companies such as the Oliver Farm Equipment Company, Singer Sewing Company, and the Studebaker Corporation which started with horse drawn carriages, wagons and later on with the manufacturing of the gorgeously unique automobiles. With this kind of industry placing South Bend firmly on the map, the city attracted families eager to work hard and make South Bend their home.
While the city was thriving economically, nearby University of Notre Dame was awarding degrees and building its name as a top American university. Early in the 20th century, the football team of Notre Dame inspired the famous collegiate fight song, the Notre Dame Victory March.
Marching on is part of South Bend’s culture. With the restructuring nationwide of industrial manufacturing, the Studebaker Corporation and other companies dissolved, and the loss of employment severely impacted the city’s population. Over the following 50 years more than 30,000 people would move elsewhere, leaving a history so rich in culture for those who stayed to share with others.
