From lounging on pristine beaches like Baie Rouge to exploring vibrant markets in Marigot or the lively boardwalk in Philipsburg, every moment feels like a postcard. Whether you're savoring fresh seafood with ocean views or capturing turquoise waves under golden skies, St. Martin is a content-rich paradise for any travel storyteller.

General Information

Located in the northeastern section of the Caribbean Sea, St. Martin, also known by its Dutch name Sint Maarten, is a small island measuring 34 square miles. Once a French and Dutch colony that has since been divided as a kingdom shared amongst the two nations, 60 per cent of its 78,000 residents live on the Dutch side, while 40 per cent can be found on the French side. The island is also known as the bargain capital of the world due to its tax and duty-free shopping opportunities, resulting in unbeatable prices on luxury items from all over the world.

Things to Do in St. Martin

St. Martin’s capital of Cupecoy is where all the action takes place. While some buildings such as the Blue Mall remain closed since Hurricane Irma, other shops, restaurants and attractions are open for business. If you’re feeling lucky, why not try your hand at the Starz City Casino (formerly the Atlantis), which has recently been remodelled.   Although located right near town, Cupecoy Bay Beach offers a secluded place to spend the day sunbathing, beachcombing, swimming and snorkelling. The sandstone cliffs that surround the beach have eroded to provide a semiprivate cove and also feature caves, some with clothing optional areas, where you can get away from the crowds.   Other St. Martin beaches that offer crystalline water and white sand include:

  • Mullet Bay
  • Maho Bay
  • Orient Bay
  • Friar’s Bay

One of the main events that attract tourists to St. Martin every year is the annual St. Maarten Heineken Regatta. Held in February-March, the four-day event sees seasoned sailors compete in a combination of windward-leeward and coastal races. The regatta is also known for its serious fun parties, with musical acts playing some of the legendary nightspots around the island.   Those wanting to see another side of St. Martin should head to Seaside Nature Park, a unique place that offers 30 acres of unspoiled nature. Here you can go on a horseback tour of the trails and beaches, or go for a hike to get a view of the nearby islands of St. Barth, Saba and St. Eustatius. The guided kayak tour of Cole Bay includes a stop for snorkelling.

I did have a good experience dealing with the charter staff. The only suggestion I can make would be that when sending revised itineraries or updated information is that somehow you reference what is new or updated info. Either in...
