In 1855, the remote Farmers’ High School of Pennsylvania was located on 200 acres and was five miles from the nearest town. Parents liked that their children could focus on their academic as well as agrarian studies away from the “evil influences” of their hometowns. Things have sure changed since then; a robust town grew up around the Farmer’s High School and it evolved into Pennsylvania State University. The town is called State College, despite a referendum in 1053 to change it.
