General Information
Once known as the Danish West Indies, the US Virgin Islands are a US territory that makes up part of the Virgin Islands archipelago. Located 40 miles east of Puerto Rico, the main islands include St. Thomas is the most populated, while St. Croix and St. John are the other most visited islands. Known for its Danish colonial architecture, the city of Charlotte Amalie on St. Thomas is the territorial capital of the US Virgin Islands. While tourism is the major industry on the islands, agriculture such as sugarcane and rum manufacturing also feed the economy.

Things to Do in US Virgin Islands
Whether you love to fish, golf, explore, or simply soak up some rays, St. Thomas has everything you could possibly wish for. Uncover the treasure that is Blackbeard’s Castle, a 17th century watchtower and one of five National Historic Landmarks in the US Virgin Islands. Take the 99 steps up to the tower to see St. Thomas’ lush green hillsides, turquoise blue water, red-terracotta roofed homes and resorts, and cruise ships moored in Charlotte Amalie. While in Charlotte Amalie, make sure to visit Fort Christian, a Danish-Norwegian fort built circa 1672. It features a museum that with a collection of indigenous relics. Coral World Ocean Park, located on Coki Point northwest on St. Thomas, is a marine park with activities such as a touch pool, undersea observatory tower and aquarium, where you can view undersea life in all its glory. Further west is the island of St. John, where you can find the beaches at Caneel Bay on the north shore. Part of the Virgin Islands National Park, which makes up most of the island, Hollywood Beach in Caneel Bay is lined by beautiful palm trees and has a colorful coral reef, which makes it perfect for snorkelling. Rent a kayak and/or stand-up paddleboard and explore the shoreline of this UNESCO World Heritage-listed National Park. Located 40 miles south of St. Thomas, St. Croix is home to Fort Christiansvaern, a National Historic Site that features a historic fortress and other structures. Just inland is the St. George Village Botanical Gardens, located at an old sugar cane plantation. Discover 2,000 years of human history at Salt River Bay National Historic Park. Hike near archaeological sites uncovered by the Danish, and scuba dive, snorkel or kayak around the coral reef. Near St. Croix is another world famous snorkelling and diving site, Buck Island Reef National Monument.
