Once known as the Danish West Indies, the US Virgin Islands are a US territory that makes up part of the Virgin Islands archipelago. Located 40 miles east of Puerto Rico, the main islands include St. Thomas is the most populated, while St. Croix and St. John are the other most visited islands. Known for its Danish colonial architecture, the city of Charlotte Amalie on St. Thomas is the territorial capital of the US Virgin Islands.
