Located on Unga Island, Squaw Harbor was home to a busy cannery until the 1950s. World War II drove up the need for salmon, and the residents of Unga Island rose to meet the demand. Currently uninhabited, the island is only 15 miles long, and was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1968. Originally named Delarov in 1833, the island later changed its name to the Aleutian Ougnagok in 1836, finally settling on the name Unga in 1894.
Unga Island is one of 20 islands in the Shumagin Islands grouping, located in the Aleutians East Borough, south of mainland Alaska. Sand Point, on one of the Shumagin Islands, is the largest populated community. Almost half of the residents are of Aleut descent; a culture camp is held annually to showcase Aleut traditions such as dancing and playing the drums. Fishing and fish processing are the sole industries on the island.
