The airport is named for Alkali Lake—the geographic sink, or drainage basin without any outflow to other bodies of water. Now mostly dry, the southern rim of Alkali Lake has small pools of water, though its depth varies depending on the level of rainfall in this arid desert region of the state. For safety reasons, this chemical waste dump is not open to visitors and only welcomes those on official business.
