Things to Do in Bedford
A historical town with Revolutionary roots, Bedford has many mansions, churches and buildings dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. It is a great place to explore on foot or bike. Some of Bedford’s more interesting and significant historical sites include:
- The Old Burying Grounds, which was open for burials until 1849.
- The Wilson Mill on Vine Brook, which dates back to 1685 and is the site of a former corn mill. The mill pond, created by damming Vine Brook, is one of the few open bodies of water in Bedford and is now part of a park system.
- The Job Lane House, built around 1713 in the New England saltbox-style and home to one of Bedford’s founding fathers.
- The Bedford Flag, the oldest known surviving intact battle flag in the US taken to the battle of Lexington and Concord during the Revolutionary War in 1775. It is now on display at the Bedford Free Public Library.
Near Bedford in Concord is the site of the Minute Man National Historical Park, which commemorates the opening battle in the American Revolutionary War. It also includes the Wayside, home to noted American authors Louisa May Alcott, Margaret Sidney and Nathaniel Hawthorne, who all lived there at one time.
The Walden Pond State Conservation area, also in Concord, is where author Henry David Thoreau wrote the book Walden. Due to its proximity to Boston, Bedford also gives you easy access to many big-city attractions and amenities.
