To get a taste of the old soul of Charleston, make sure to visit the historic district, with its cobblestone streets, iron gates, and many fine restaurants, many of which are in centuries-old buildings. Charleston is also known for its preserved plantations and gardens. Three that are open to the public include:
- Magnolia Plantation and Gardens
- Boone Hall Plantation
- Drayton Hall
A historic tour of the city must include a ferry ride over to Fort Sumter to see where the Civil War began. You can also step back through time when visiting the Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum, which gives a glimpse of Charleston’s military past and present.
For amazing views of the city and the coast, Charleston Waterfront Park invites patrons to lounge or stroll along trails. For an industrial experience, take the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge looking over the Cooper River, where you can walk, drive, or bike through the city and see unforgettable views.
For families, the South Carolina Aquarium has a variety of sea life, shows, and activities showcasing native and exotic marine life.
