Located close to Kahului, the Ioa Valley State Park is where King Kamehameha is said to have defeated the Maui army in his quest to unite the Hawaiian Islands. The park features a scenic viewpoint of the Kuka-emoku, also known as the ‘Iao Needle, which rises 1,200 feet from the valley floor.

The city also has a number of casual family restaurants offering everything from traditional Hawaiian plate lunches, fresh poke (fish salad) and other seafood delicacies, as well as international cuisine. The Maui Arts and Culture Center is where you can experience traditional and modern performances, including hula dance, slack-key guitar, symphony, ballet, taiko drumming, children’s theater, and more. Indigenous flora and fauna can also be found at the Kanaha Pond Wildlife Sanctuary, which is located next to the Kanaha Beach Park, and the Maui Nui Botanical Gardens, located in the center of town.
