General Information

Well known as a peaceful, elegant island off the coast of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard has become America’s affluent summer colony in Massachusetts. Known as Hollywood’s East Coast hideout, as well as home to politicians, executives, and affluent families, Martha’s Vineyard has one of the largest collections of extravagant estates and mansions designed and built for the world’s social and financial elite.

US statistics show that the cost of living in Martha’s Vineyard is 60 percent higher than the national average while housing prices are 96 per cent higher than the norm. A popular vacation spot for private jet travelers, many travel to Martha’s Vineyard for a romantic getaway or just to get away from it all. The island features six towns and numerous beaches as well as resorts, vacation rentals, hotels and inns along with restaurants and shops that cater to visitors.

Things to Do in Martha’s Vineyard

One of the most well-known beaches is located in the town of Aquinnah (formerly known as Gay Head) on the western end of the island. Many hike to the clay cliffs that lie above the beach for a truly breathtaking view. Located on the northwestern tip of the island is the town of Oak Bluffs, where Ocean Park is located. Popular for kite flying, playing Frisbee and catching the occasional concert, the park is surrounded by pristine Victorian mansions.

Golf destinations on Martha’s Vineyard include many beautiful private golf courses and golf clubs. Golf trips by private jets are especially popular for Martha’s Vineyard air charter.

Next to the park is the Flying Horses Carousel, the oldest operating platform carousel in the US. For some sand and surf, head to Oak Bluffs town beach or travel along the coast for the quieter Inkwell Beach or Joseph Sylvia State Beach, which was the main shooting location for the film Jaws.

At the tip of the bluff is the East Chop Light, a historic lighthouse that overlooks Vineyard Haven Harbor and Vineyard Sound, where the ferries to and from Nantucket Island, as well as Woods Hole and Hyannis on the Cape Cod peninsula, can be seen coming to shore. For a walk in the woods, a trip inland to Manuel F. Correllus State Park is a must.

The forest borders Martha’s Vineyard Airport and is located near the towns of West Tisbury and Edgartown. On the south edge of the island is Long Point Wildlife Refuge beach, which features sheltered salt and freshwater ponds and grasslands great for bird watching. Just east of the park is South Beach State Park, popular for surfing.

Although Martha’s Vineyard was named for the wild vines found on the island, very few wineries actually still exist on the island. However, wine is still celebrated with two wine festivals in Edgartown: May is the annual MV Wine Fest, a four-day event that features top international wines paired with food prepared by renowned chefs while October’s Food and Wine Festival also showcases local chefs and premier wines.
