The capital and largest city in the small landlocked country of Belarus, Minsk offers a real worldview of a former Soviet town. Most of the city was destroyed during World War II. Stalin himself oversaw the reconstruction of Minsk in the 1950s into a city epitomizing communist ideals. After the fall of the USSR in 1990, Belarus became an independent nation in 1991. Although some of the remnants of its past can be seen in the Soviet “block” architecture, Minsk today is a clean, green and safe city, with many modern amenities. Minsk is also known as the Silicon Valley of Eastern Europe. The Belarus Hi-Tech Park, which is located north of the city, has 192 software and high-tech companies, half of which are foreign and joint ventures.

There's plenty to do in Minsk from ice skating to skiing at the nearby resorts of resorts Silichy and Lagoisk to shopping and dining near Independence Square. Make sure to try Belarus’s national drink, Krambambula, which has vodka flavoured with honey and spices similar to mead, as well as the one of 300 traditional
dishes made from potatoes. Although Minsk has its fair share of casinos, dating back to when Russia banned gambling, as well as trendy restaurants and fashionable shops, the city is free of kitschy tourist attractions. Instead you can experience culture and some history that takes you through the thralls of Minsk’s decimation in the Second World War up to Soviet occupation and its eventual sovereignty. This includes the State Security Committee of the Republic of Belarus, still known as the KGB, which has its headquarters near one of the main shopping districts of Minsk, while a statue of Lenin can still be found of the Supreme Soviet building in Independence Square (Praspyekt Nyezalyezhnastsi), which is also home to the Belarusian State University and the historic Red Church, built in 1910. Some other places of interest include the Orthodox St. Peter and Paul Church, the oldest church in Minsk, and the Belarus National Museum of History and Culture. Minsk also features a link to a major American event, as it once served as home to Lee Harvey Oswald, who lived in the city after denouncing his U.S. citizenship. Oswald married and had a child in Minsk before emigrating back to the U.S., where he was accused of assassinating President John F. Kennedy in 1963. We were very disappointed in the catering service. The lobster was undercooked and the sevruga caviar we ordered turned out to be lumpfish. Which we did not eat. We intended to take all the food to our home with the lobster, which we were going to cook to make it suitable to eat, but when we arrived home discovered that our food had not been unloaded from the plane. The only thing we ate on the plane was a small piece of the lobster.

From pre-trip planning to updates via text message on your way to the airport, Stratos had us covered. We made our way from Emirates @ JFK and the FOB transfer was easy. Joel had already updated Julie (my assistant) before we landed that there were long delays out of JFK due to weather. The transfer to FBO was easy and they were expecting us. The plane was comfortable and modern and the crew could not have been kinder. Thank you guys as always for a great trip.
