The home of the famed Cirque du Soleil acrobatic-theatrical troupe, the Just for Laughs Comedy Festival as well as one of original hockey teams in the NHL, the Canadiens, which the locals lovingly refer to as the Habs (short for Habitants), Montreal has it all.
The lifestyle here is very much about joie de vivre (joy of living), and the city’s residents and large student population (the city is home to six universities and 12 junior colleges) know how to have a good time. Lounges, bars, pubs and nightclubs line the streets in Vieux (old) Montreal while live music -from traditional Irish and Quebecois to jazz, hip hop and alternative rock- emits from just about every venue.
A drive or walk up to Mount Royal is a great place to get a 360-degree vista of the city. Located just west of downtown, the hill and its surrounding parkland is especially beautiful in the fall, when the tree foliage has turned color.
There are numerous activities to be had year round, including biking or hiking in summer or snowshoeing, skating or tobogganing in winter.
You can get a taste for about every culture around the globe in Montreal, reflected through the city’s neighborhoods. This multicultural lifestyle is especially noted in the food, where restaurants serve up everything from traditional French and Quebecois dishes such as cretons (a spread made from pork), tourtière (meat pie) and maple-infused desserts to excellent Jewish delicatessen such as Montreal-style bagels and smoked meat.
One of the most famed dishes invented in Montreal has to be poutine, which is a concoction of French fries smothered in gravy and cheese curds. You can even indulge is some gourmet poutine at finer dining establishments. Why not try poutine topped with foie gras, lobster or duck?
