Moscow has one of the richest and most interesting histories and cultures of any place in Europe. You can still see remnants of when the tsars and emperors ruled the land before the Russian Revolution and the rise of the Soviet Union. Admire the magnificent architecture by visiting the historically significant Kremlin in the heart of Moscow. Once the home to the royal palaces, and later home to the government, the Kremlin is an immense fortified compound of churches, palaces and museums. Here you will find the:
- Grand Kremlin Palace
- Cathedral Square and Dormiton Cathedral
- Kremlin Towers and Wall
- Ivan the Great Bell Tower
- The Armoury
Located right next to the Kremlin is the famed Red Square, where you will see Moscow’s most famed landmark. St. Basil’s Cathedral, with its colourful bulbous spires and ornate décor, now serves as a museum. The home of some of the most famous symphonies, artists, and performance spaces in the world, you cannot visit Moscow without visiting its cultural institutions. This includes the:
- Museum of Moscow
- Moscow Museum of Modern Art
- State Tretyakov Gallery
- Bolshoi Theatre
- Victory Museum
- Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics
Travel by the historic Moscow Metro, Moscow’s underground transit system, which is recognized as a city landmark due to the extensive decor and unique architecture of all its 185 beautifully ornate terminals. You can take the metro to Pushkin Square, in the Tverskoy District of central Moscow. Home to the Pushkin Monument, it offers a casual, outdoor sightseeing experience, where you can feed the pigeons or bring a blanket and relax with a book. Moscow is also home to two of the world’s most extravagant shopping malls: GUM, which is located in Red Square, and Aviapark, a six-storey shopping center in Moscow’s Aeroport District. The latter is the second largest shopping mall in Europe.
