01

General Information

St. Barths, short for Saint Barthémely, is a tiny, volcanic island featuring 22 stunning beaches that are surrounded by majestic shallow-water reefs. Originally colonized by the French, St. Barths was turned over to Sweden in the 17th century and then sold back to French in 1878. The island is now part of the overseas collectivities of France in the West Indies, which also includes St. Martin, located 22 miles northeast across the St. Barthélemy Channel. Its capital, Gustavia, is the site of numerous five-star hotels.   St. Barths’ tourism industry attracts more than 70,000 visitors a year to its luxury resorts and villas, while many others arrive on lavish yachts. New Year’s Eve is a popular time to visit the island, and marks the height of the tourism season.

Things to Do in St. Barths

If you’re looking to hit the water by day and party by night, then St. Barths is the place to be.   Gustavia is where most of the action takes place. The capital and most populated city on the island is encircled by a harbor that was once protected by three forts and is now filled with luxury yachts.   Home to numerous high-end resorts, restaurants, and nightspots, Gustavia is also a popular shopping destination, with its streets lined with designer boutiques and duty-free shops.   A visit to some of the island’s historical attractions is also recommended. Many were established in the mid-to-late 17th century when the Swedes were based on the island. This includes the Wall House, which now acts as a museum and tells of the Swedish colonial history. Perched above popular Shell Beach is Fort Karl, which offers breathtaking views of the red-roofed buildings of Gustavia and the harbor. Spectacular views can also be found on the north side of town, where a lighthouse and a few cannons stand at the site of the former Fort Gustave.   Make sure to get out on the water while on the island. You can charter anything from a pleasure craft, catamaran to a private yacht. Bring along snorkel or scuba gear to explore the colourful coral reefs at Pain de Sucre, an islet off Gustavia harbor, or around l’Ane Rouge, a small cape off Colombier Bay.   St. Barths also plays hosts to a number of sailing regattas each year, including the renowned St. Barths Bucket, a three-day regatta that attracts sailors from around the world and is home to a number of shore-side events. Try your hand at windsurfing, kitesurfing, and even fly fishing at Anse de Grand Cul-de-Sac, located on the northeast part of the island. The reef-protected waters are also perfect for swimming and sunbathing. The area also features a number of nearby eateries.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the main airport used for private jet charters to St. Barths?

    dropdown dropdown

Private jet charters to St. Barths typically arrive at Princess Juliana International Airport (TNCM, also known as St. Maarten Airport) on the nearby island of St. Maarten. It features a runway of 7,546 by 148 feet, providing safe landings for private aircraft. From there, travelers transfer to St. Barths (about 22 miles away) by ferry, helicopter, or connecting flight. Stratos Jets advisors help coordinate the best arrival airport and onward transport based on your itinerary.

  • Why is landing on St. Barths challenging, and how does that affect private jet travel?

    dropdown dropdown

St. Barths has its own Gustaf III Airport (SBH / TFFJ), but it features an extremely short runway of about 2,100-2,133 feet, a steep hill approach (often over a traffic circle), and ends directly on a beach, making it one of the world’s most challenging airports for landings and takeoffs. Only small STOL (short takeoff and landing) aircraft like certain turboprops can operate there, and pilots need special qualifications. Most private jets use St. Maarten (TNCM) instead for safety and aircraft compatibility.
