While Nevis, the smaller of the two islands, serves as a quieter location, perfect for honeymooners and vacationers seeking some solace, St. Kitts offers more amenities such as shops, restaurants and nightspots. Both have incredible beaches. Nevis has an unparalleled natural beauty, with white, golden and black-sand beaches and palm trees that provide a natural shade on their fringes. Pinney’s and the more sheltered Oualie Beach are popular destinations for those who love to sunbathe and beachcomb, while Booby High Shoals is a popular dive site for those wanting to see sea turtles and stingrays. The island’s capital of Charlestown is known for its British colonial and Georgian-style buildings and is the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton, one of the founding fathers of the US. His home now serves as the Museum of Nevis History. Nevis was also known for its sugar production. Large sugarcane plantations, and some of the ruins, can still be found on the island. Some of them serve as accommodations, including Montpelier Plantation and Beach, now a boutique hotel, which is located near the original site where Horatio Nelson, captain of the HMS Boreas, married Frances Herbert Nisbet. Her family estate, the Nisbet Great House, is also a resort. While on Nevis, be sure to also check out:
- Nevis Peak, the island’s main peak
- Nelson’s Lookout
- Nevis Jockey Club
- George’s Gingerland
- The Caves (fame diving spot)
- Horatio Nelson Museum
- New River Estate, International Slavery Museum
- Montravers Great House
- Fort Charles
St. Kitts also offers vacationers the full holiday experience. Frigate Bay, which offers the top-rated beach on the island, has a number of high-end resorts, restaurants, a casino, yacht club and golf course. While its white sand shores are covered by vacationing families during the day, South Frigate Beach comes alive at night with beach bars that feature live music, dancing, bonfires, and even karaoke. The capital city of Basseterre also has a number of historical attractions, including:
- Old Treasury Building/National Museum of St. Kitts
- Berkeley Memorial
- The War Memorial
- Independence Square
For those who want to go off the beaten path, a hike to Mt. Liamuiga, the highest point in St. Kitts, offers spectacular views of the nearby islands of Saba, Statia, St. Barths, St. Martin, and Antigua. Not far from Mt. Liamuiga is Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park, a UNESCO Heritage Site that sits on a double peaked volcanic hill above the sea. A feat of engineering, it was built by African slaves and used by the British as they fought for dominance over the island from the French and Spanish. For a scenic tour of the island, hop aboard the St. Kitts Scenic Railway, built in 1912 and 1926 to transport sugar around the island. It offers a 30-mile circle tour in air-conditioned comfort.
