An overseas territory of the United Kingdom, this 37-mile stretch of 40 different low-lying coral islands southeast of the Bahamas is one of the most enchanting destinations in the world.
Besides its many glorious beaches, Turks and Caicos caters to honeymooners, couples and families looking for a luxurious getaway at its many upscale resorts, hotels and villas. Play a round of golf, rent a charter and go deep-sea fishing or dive to see one of the many coral reefs around the islands.
Things to Do in Turks and Caicos
Resplendent in turquoise shaded waters is the main island of Providenciales, known as Provo.
The island is home to the crystalline Grace Bay Beach, which is known for its calm water and is located close to numerous luxury resorts, shops and restaurants as well as the Casablanca Casino. Play a hand by night and a round of golf during the day at the top-rated Provo Golf Club, named the 5
th Best Caribbean Golf Course by
USA Today’s Readers Choice, 2018.
The islands have many secluded and windswept beaches, popular for beachcombing. You might even come across the elusive Queen Conch, which has become endangered due to overfishing. For those who want to see and enjoy some of these beautiful sea creatures, you can visit the world’s only conch farm on Provo, which supplies conch meat and shells to the entire country and for export.
Just south of Provo, the Caicos Islands are mostly inhabited, although there are some things to see and experience. South Caicos was once home to a large sea salt industry and the large salt ponds (salinas), along with the dividing walls, gates and windmill pumps can still be found there.
Further south is the much smaller Grand Turk Island, which is home to the capital of Cockburn Town and the Turks and Caicos National Museum.
On the northern tip of the island is the 19
th century Grand Turk Lighthouse, which stands at 60 feet and overlooks the large bay of North Creek.
Another popular attraction is to take a charter from Grand Turks to Gibbs Cay, located in a national park, to watch southern stingrays from the shallow waters.
Other popular snorkel and scuba diving sites where you can visit coral reefs and see species of turtles, fish, dolphins and whales include:
- Pine Cay
- Salt Cay
- West Caicos
- French Cay
