Get your kicks on historic Route 66, starting in Kingman, Arizona. The town started as a simple railway siding for the Beale Springs-Winslow railway line. The railway brought settlers, and in 1882, Kingman was incorporated. The community was named after its first surveyor, civil engineer Lewis Kingman. What was once a wagon road and then a railway line eventually became Highway 66, stretching from Chicago to Los Angeles. Luckily, the city of Kingman was in the center of the route, and grew rapidly in the post-war years.
Of course, air travel via the jet charter airport in Kingman has replaced long highway trips through the desert. But if the nostalgia and stark beauty of a desert road trip appeals to you, there are numerous tours and rental agencies to help you get your “Route 66 Fix”.
Kingman has grown as an aviation center as well. During the second world war, the airfield was devoted to aerial gunnery practice. Postwar, since it was halfway between Phoenix and Las Vegas, the Kingman Airfield was a vital link for both military and civilian small aircraft. The city also benefited from its proximity to the Mineral Park Mine and the Chrysler Proving Ground facilities. The airport proved to be ideal for executives traveling to these facilities.
The Kingman airport has two runways, approximately 6,800 feet long, and an FBO to provide executive private jet services.
