Wrangell may be on the edge of the continent, but it is a world away in tranquility and stunning natural beauty. This tiny community (populations 2,127 in 2020) welcomes visitors who want to experience life on the boundary of the Pacific.
Due to its remote location, Wrangell had closer economic ties to Russia than to other European nations. The area was founded as a fur-trading post in 1811, and in 1834 was named after Baron Wrangel, head of Russian interests in North America.
The fur trade, whaling and fishing were the major economic drivers as the area grew. Of course, the mid-nineteenth century Gold Rush era brought new commerce to the area, only to dry up once the gold boom ended. Visitors can still experience the overlapping Tlingit native culture, Russian influences and Gold Rush-era legends.
The airport itself features a 6,000 foot runway, which can handle aircraft up to a midsize charter jet.
Modern travelers use the jet charter airport in Wrangell to access the area’s amazing sport-fishing, kayaking and photo-worthy outdoor splendor. Cultural tourism is also growing, as much of the original Tlingit native culture is being rediscovered and shared in the local museum. Many executives charter flights to Wrangell to do business with nearby fishing and logging firms. No matter the reason for your visit, you’ll be charmed by this resilient community in southern Alaska.
